On August 9, 2020, Alta Nell Dale (“Nell”) walked on to a new life with her Lord and her loved ones. Nell was born in Searcy, Arkansas on November 28, 1927 to Russell Tate Dale and Alta May Stringham Dale, but Nell spent most of her life in Palestine, Texas. She graduated from Palestine High School in May 1945 and attended Nixon’s Business College. Nell married Robert Ragan Broyles of Palestine on May 26, 1946, after he returned from World War II, and they were married for 50 years, until his death. They had 7 children, with one very premature twin only surviving a few days. Their 6 surviving children went through grades 1-12 in the Westwood School District. When her youngest child started school, Nell began taking classes at the new University of Texas at Tyler. She was in the second graduating class at UT Tyler, earning her Bachelors Degree. She also completed her Masters Degree at UT Tyler and taught special education reading at Westwood Elementary until she retired. Nell was a lifelong Methodist. She lived her last decade in two assisted living facilities, the Waterford in College Station and the Heartis in Longview. They were wonderful to her. She was happy, social and active during her time in assisted living, making wonderful friends. She loved the food, especially desserts, she loved ‘winning’ at bingo, and life was complete so long as she got to take communion from a Methodist preacher once a month. Nell lived a long and blessed life, with a combination of chronic conditions finally proving too much for her. She will be missed by her family very much.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ragan Broyles, her sons Robert Ragan Broyles, Jr., Clifford Dale Broyles and his twin Michael Wayne Broyles. She is survived by her daughters Susan Elaine Broyles Goodson of Longview, Tempe Joan Broyles Konecny of Cincinnati, Ohio, Alta Melissa Broyles of College Station, Texas, and Peggy Lynn Broyles Forster of Longview. Nell is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
