Obituary

Teresa Gail McGowan Agee, age 65, passed away April 10, 2023, in the company of her loved ones. Family and friends will remember Teresa for her smile and her delight in telling a great story, especially one with a punchline.

Teresa was born November 5, 1958 at Markham Hospital in Longview, Texas, to Charles and Billye Jo McGowan. Teresa was welcomed by big sister Rhonda and joined 2 years later by little sister Nancy.

Teresa and her family moved to Kenedy where she attended elementary and middle school. In her years at Kenedy Elementary and Kenedy Junior High, Teresa made dear, life-long friends. In 1971, the McGowan family moved to Spring Hill where Teresa attended Spring Hill High School, graduating in 1976 as the Valedictorian. While attending Kilgore Junior College, Teresa received a serendipitous roommate assignment in Renee Agee and shortly thereafter she fell for Renee's older brother, Aubrey. Teresa married Aubrey in 1980 at the Spring Hill First Baptist Church. Teresa continued her education at Stephen F. Austin State University where she received her master's degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. In 1984, Teresa and Aubrey welcomed a baby girl, Jo Gail.

Throughout her career, Teresa assisted clients of all ages with their speech therapy needs, from the East Texas Rehabilitation Center to local schools and rest homes. In the second half of her career, Teresa spent most of her time in nursing homes helping elderly patients to overcome various challenges related to speech.

Anyone who knew Teresa was familiar with her great love of animals. Whether feline or canine, pint-sized or colossal, Teresa rescued many animals over the years. Nothing made her happier than being in the company of her family, both human and animal alike. Teresa was many things - daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, animal lover, and therapist; but in 2018, she added a new title, one that became her favorite: "Mimi."

Though her stature was small, Teresa's personality was big, and her eyes often contained a sparkle of mischief. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jo Gail Agee Cheek (husband Brad) of White Oak, grandson Jensen and granddaughter Jetta; mother Billye Jo McGowan of Gilmer and sisters Rhonda McGowan Baker of Kenedy and Nancy McGowan Johnson (husband Joe Mac) of Huntsville; sisters-in-law Cheryl Agee Stewart (husband Mike) of Marshall and Renee Agee of Austin, as well as her beloved nephews, nieces, and furry companions. Teresa was preceded in death by her loving husband, Aubrey, and doting father, Charles McGowan.

Arrangements have been made by East Texas Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to LongviewPaws.org in Teresa's memory. Donations can also be mailed to Longview Paws at P.O. Box 808, Longview, TX 75606.
